New Student Registration
New Student Registration

Welcome to Fredericksburg City Public Schools!
We're excited to help you begin the enrollment process for your child in Fredericksburg City Public Schools. Before getting started, please use the City of Fredericksburg Elementary Schools Districts Web App to verify that your home address falls within our school district.
Registration for all students in grades K-12 is managed by the Division Registrar, located at:
Walker-Grant Center
210 Ferdinand Street
Fredericksburg, VA 22401
To register for our Preschool Programs, visit the Preschool Registration Portal for more information. Please note that families cannot register for preschool through the Enrollment Express platform.
This site will guide you through everything you need to register your student, including required documents, school zone information, and important timelines.
Before You Start
Before you begin your online registration, please collect the following documents to ensure a smooth process. The paperwork is best submitted electronically, or arrangements can be made to bring paper copies to an appointment. To ensure your child can start school as soon as possible, please be sure all required documents are able to be clearly read and uploaded completely at the time of registration.
Documents Required for Registration
To enroll your student(s) at Fredericksburg City Public Schools, you will need to complete the pre-registration process for each student. Only a parent/guardian living at the same address as the student may register and enroll the student. Stepparents cannot register a student on behalf of a biological parent. The biological parent that the student is residing with must register the student. If you have more questions regarding this issue, please contact the FCPS Registrar.
Instructions for Registering Your Student Online
- To begin, click the button below for New Student Registration, or go to PowerSchool Enrollment Express and complete the pre-registration form. A form will need to be submitted for each student that you are registering.
- Once your pre-registration form has been accepted, you will receive an email from no-reply@fxbgschools.com confirming that your pre-registration form was approved. It will contain instructions on how to create a PowerSchool account. You will need a PowerSchool (Parent Portal) account in order to complete the registration process. If you do not receive an email within 72 hours, contact the FCPS Registrar at ataylor@cityschools.com for assistance.
- After you receive the enrollment email, go to Student and Parent Sign In to create your Parent Portal account and link your students. You can then complete the registration process in the portal, using the Forms section on the left-hand side. For visuals and more information on this process, please see the Guide to Enrollment Express below.
Important Notes About Uploading Documents
You will need to upload the documents listed above into the online registration system. Please prepare them in advance. You will need to be able to access these documents on the device you will use for registration. You can save these documents by scanning paper copies, saving PDFs from online accounts, or by taking clear pictures of them.
If your documents are saved on your phone, you will need to email them to yourself or use a cloud-based drive to access them from the device you will use for registration. A computer, laptop, Chromebook, or larger device like an iPad is suggested.
The Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Fredericksburg has public access computers available.
Each item must be submitted while active in the PowerSchool Registration System and before pressing SUBMIT on the final registration screen. You can save your progress and come back later to add information or uploads. However, once you hit the SUBMIT button, the registration system closes and you will not be able to edit information or add documents.
If you need to schedule a virtual appointment to complete your student's registration, click the link below.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
TBD. That date has not yet been confirmed. Check back soon for updates.
-
A child must be 5 years old on or before September 30 of the school year when they intend to enroll in kindergarten. This is Virginia state law.
-
Yes, any child who has not reached their 6th birthday on or before September 30 may be exempted from school attendance until the following year if the parent feels the child is not mentally, physically, or emotionally prepared to attend school. In this case, the parent must notify the School Board of the decision to postpone enrollment.
-
Yes, students who are currently in the FCPS Preschool program, still need to complete kindergarten registration, including submission of all registration documents.
-
Birth certificates may be obtained from the Department of Vital Statistics in the state where the child was born. DMV will also issue original birth certificates (this can be faster). The Fredericksburg Health Department may also be able to assist you if your child was born in Virginia. It can sometimes be a long process, so we encourage you to obtain the certificate before registering. The original birth certificate must be presented during registration.
-
If transferring from another school or school division, a copy of the student's physical examination form must be in the previous school's records and available upon request. Students entering secondary schools (grades 6-12) are not required to furnish a physical examination form, although this report is often beneficial.
-
Routine immunizations for children are available at the Fredericksburg Health Department. Parents should call ahead for clinic hours and to schedule an appointment at (540) 899-4142.
-
Contact the FCPS registrar at (540) 940-8380 or ataylor@cityschools.com.
-
If there are any changes to your name, address or phone number(s), please contact your child's school so that his/her records may be updated to reflect your new information.
-
No. All successfully submitted enrollments must be reviewed for completeness. The division registrar will then contact you regarding next steps, which will include scheduling an in-person or virtual appointment to meet with the registrar to present original birth certificate and parent/guardian ID. Your child will not be able to start school until the full process is complete.
-
We recommend that you fill out all the forms in one setting to avoid incomplete registrations. However, PowerSchool enrollment will save the progress of the registration form and allow completion later.
